Working with Schools
One of the key elements of the Forum's work is to engage young people with bowling through working with schools in the local area. Over the last few years we have worked with:
- St Michaels Primary, Aughton (at Cockbeck BC)
- Ormskirk Cof E Primary, Ormskirk (at Windmill BC)
- Mount Carmel, Aughton (at Dog & Gun BC)
- St James, Westhead (at Halton Castle BC)
- Ormskirk School (secondary) (at Windmill BC)
- Churchtown Primary Schools (at Botanic)
- St Georges RC Primary, Maghull (at Kensington House BC)
The sessions have been very positively received and we very much want to expand this work with schools and are looking to work with more schools, particularly in Burscough, Formby and Southport.
Each session has an evaluation form which was filled in by the teacher present. Just to outline some of the comments from teachers:
“A most enjoyable session – children had a brilliant time and improved their skills thanks to some helpful instruction.” Mount Carmel
“Well organised with one adult per group of 4 to give constructive advice. Children all seemed to be very focussed and thoroughly enjoyed themselves” St Michaels
Crown Green Bowls is truly a ‘sport for all’ – everyone can take part and have a go. It fits in well with Government initiatives to get children participating in sport. Whilst those who already have sporting ability quickly take to the sport, this also applies to those who are not as interested in the more traditional physical sports and can give such children a real sense of achievement. We have coloured bowls that children love to play with and, as well as teaching the basics, we can bring a great deal of variety to sessions through different games, including target mats.
If you think that this scheme could be of benefit to your children, we would welcome the opportunity to come and have a quick chat (it should only take about 15-20 mins) with the appropriate person from your school to discuss what the children will get from our scheme, any issues or concerns you may have, and how we could arrange sessions (or a single session) at a local green to suit both the school and the instructors, so that we will be ready to start around April/May 2009. For example you may wish a large number of children to be given a single taster session or for the same group to be given instruction over a few weeks. Clearly we will do our best to facilitate any sessions you would like to have, but it will depend on the availability of instructors and equipment.
