About our organisation...

The 'Ormskirk & District Junior Bowling Initiative' started on an informal basis in 2007, after the Windmill Bowling Club was successful in a bid to the Awards for All Lottery Fund for a grant which included monies to fund the purchase of junior bowling equipment and for the training of instructors. This first year saw Ormskirk C of E Primary School and St James Primary School, Westhead, taking part in taster sessions.  The Windmill Bowling Club also started Saturday morning sessions for children and formed a team to play freindly matches.

On Monday 28th February 2008, at a meeting of the instructors, it was agreed to formalise the Junior Bowling Initiative and a constitution was adopted.  The four founder member clubs were the Windmill, Comrades, Halton Castle and Cockbeck Bowling Clubs.

In 2008 more schools took part in taster sessions through this initiative.  These were Ormskirk School (secondary) and Mount Carmel, St Michaels (Aughton) and Lathom St James. Sessions were also held with the 1st Ormskirk Cubs and the Aughton Brownies.  Altogether over 200 children were given some coaching in crown green bowling and it was very successful with teachers giving very positive feedback.  Some of those trained were so keen that they started coming along to the Saturday morning junior bowling held by the Windmill Bowling Club.

In October 2009 it was agreed to expand the organisation to include clubs from the Sefton area, with Formby Legion, Zetland and Botanic Bowling Clubs expressing a desire to join.  We have now started a junior league including all clubs running junior sections. Any Club in the West Lancashire or Sefton area is free to join - we have set a low membership fee of just £10 which will just pay for basic administration.  Please contact our Secretary if you are interested in joining, or just want more details of what we are planning to do.
